Neotype: BMNH 1979.8.15.1. Syntypes: ZMB 8804 (1, dry, lost). Type catalog: Paepke 1999:65 [ref. 24282]. Spelled malabarica on plate. Spelled malabar in Lacepède 1803:459 [ref. 4930]. Whitehead 1969:274 suggested a putative neotype (BMNH 1868.10.25.27). On p. 116 of Bloch's Ichthyologie, v. 12 [ref. 21381]. Neotype designated by Hata et al. 2023:555 [ref. 40600]. The species known for long as Thryssa malabarica or Thrissina malabarica, should be called Thryssa cuvierii (Swainson 1839). •Valid as Thryssa malabarica (Bloch 1795) -- (Whitehead et al. 1988:435 [ref. 5725], Talwar & Jhingran 1991:146 [ref. 20764], Bijukumar & Sushama 2000:184 [ref. 25703], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S97 [ref. 27377], Psomadakis et al. 2015:159 [ref. 34104], Ali et al. 2018:309 [ref. 36183], Suresh et al. 2018:82 [ref. 36495], Habib & Islam 2020:Supplementary table p. 7 [ref. 38321], Anderson 2022:174 [ref. 39690]). •Valid as Thrissina malabarica (Bloch 1795) -- (Hata et al. 2023:555 [ref. 40600]). Current status: Valid as Thryssa malabarica (Bloch 1795). Engraulidae: Coiliinae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Persian Gulf east to Philippines and Papua new Guinea, north to Korea, south to northern Australia. Habitat: brackish, marine.
