Bonhomme et al. 2022:[6] 598 [ref. 39183] treat MNHN 2002-1716 (holotype of Engraulis albidus Borsa, Collet & Durand 2005) from the Mediterranean coast of southern France as the holotype of Engraulis encrasicolus maeoticus Pusanov & Zeeb 1926, without designating a neotype; this action is not valid, as the syntypes originated from the Sea of Azov and were collected in the 1920s. •Synonym of Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus 1758), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Ninua & Japoshvili 2008:164 [ref. 31251]). •Possibly valid as Engraulis maeoticus Pusanov & Zeeb 1926 -- (Bonhomme et al. 2022:[6] 598 [ref. 39183]). •Synonym of Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Svetovidov 1973:111 [ref. 7169], Whitehead et al. 1988:316 [ref. 5725], Bogutskaya & Naseka 2004:30 [ref. 28183], Parin et al. 2014:51 [ref. 33547]).
