Fish Commission v. 23 (pt 2) [for 1903]; ref. 1631] Vicinity of Kauai Island, Hawaiian Islands, Albatross station 4183, depth 957-1067 fathoms. Holotype (unique): USNM 51594 [not 51592]. Not regarded as preoccupied by use of this name as purpurascens by Jordan & Snyder 1904:235 [ref. 2519]; Chimaera gilberti Garman 1911 is therefore regarded as an unneeded replacement. Second specimen mentioned as identified as this species by Snyder is not regarded as a type. •Valid as Hydrolagus purpurescens (Gilbert 1905) -- (Shirai in Amaoka et al. 1983:63, 172 [ref. 8379], Nakaya in Masuda et al. 1984:17 [ref. 6441], Didier 1995:15 [ref. 22713], Didier 1995:15 [ref. 22713], Nakabo 2000:114 [ref. 25086], Nakabo 2002:114 [ref. 26001], Shinohara et al. 2005:392 [ref. 28370], Mundy 2005:86 [ref. 28379], Parin et al. 2014:17 [ref. 33547], Dyldin 2015:78 [ref. 34524], Weigmann 2016:168 [ref. 34211], Walovich et al. 2017:517 [ref. 35113], Motomura et al. 2017:19 [ref. 35490], Dyldin & Orlov 2018:173 [ref. 35920]). Current status: Valid as Hydrolagus purpurescens (Gilbert 1905). Chimaeridae. Distribution: Western and central Pacific: southern Japan to Hancock and Koko seamounts (Hawaiian Islands). Habitat: marine.
