Syntypes: MNHN 1922-0184 to 0189 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1). Protosalanx brevirostralis is a misspelling. •Synonym of Protosalanx hyalocranius (Abbott 1901) -- (Mai 1978:18 [ref. 13511]). •Valid as Neosalanx brevirostris (Pellegrin 1923) -- (Roberts 1984:212 [ref. 5318], Zheng et al. 1989:27 [ref. 21202], Zhang & Qiao 1994:101 [ref. 18971], Lim in Randall & Lim 2000:590 [ref. 25122], Kottelat 2001:56 [ref. 25482], Choi et al. 2003:191, 528 [ref. 26218], Fu et al. 2012:853 [ref. 31691], Kottelat 2013:268 [ref. 32989], Hibino in Kimura et al. 2018:52 [ref. 36460], Taki et al. 2021:307 [ref. 39830]). Current status: Valid as Neosalanx brevirostris (Pellegrin 1923). Salangidae. Distribution: Northwestern Pacific: northern Vietnam and China to Korea, including inland waters of China; introduced in the Mekong River basin. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
