petenensis, Tetragonopterus Günther [A.] 1864:326 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 5; ref. 1974] Lake Petén, Guatemala. Lectotype: BMNH 1864.1.26.374. Other syntypes are from Ecuador. Lectotype selected by Schmitter-Soto 2017:1404 [ref. 35414]. •Questionably a synonym of Astyanax mexicanus (De Filippi 1853) -- (Buckup in Reis et al. 2003:111 [ref. 27061]). •Valid as Astyanax petenensis (Günther 1864) -- (Schmitter-Soto 2017:1403 [ref. 35414], Page et al. 2023:77 [ref. 40505], Zanata & Bertaco 2024:106 [ref. 40817]). Current status: Valid as Astyanax petenensis (Günther 1864). Characidae: Stethaprioninae. Distribution: Central America: Lake Petén basin (Guatemala). Habitat: freshwater.
