Holotype: FMNH 54748 [ex CM 3395a]. Paratypes: (17, CM) CAS 44225 (3), FMNH 54749-50 (9, 5). Type catalog: Henn 1928:64 [ref. 12305], Ibarra & Stewart 1987:31 [ref. 12367]. •Valid as Astyanax acanthogaster (Eigenmann 1911) -- (Géry et al. 1996:10 [ref. 22155]). •Valid as Deuterodon acanthogaster Eigenmann 1911 -- (Britski et al. 1999:36 [ref. 24147]). •Valid as Jupiaba acanthogaster (Eigenmann 1911) -- (Zanata 1997:122 [ref. 24112], Buckup in Reis et al. 2003:142 [ref. 27061], Zanata & Lima 2005:273 [ref. 28235], Pereira & Lucinda 2007:54 [ref. 29302], Birindelli et al. 2009:15 [ref. 30143], Netto-Ferreira et al. 2009:65 [ref. 30519], Sarmiento et al. 2014:184 [ref. 35004], Lopes et al. 2020:890 [ref. 37664]). Current status: Valid as Jupiaba acanthogaster (Eigenmann 1911). Characidae: Stethaprioninae. Distribution: South America: Paraguay River basin and upper Paraná River basin (Brazil and Bolivia). Habitat: freshwater.
