loretoensis, Hyphessobrycon Ladiges [W.] in Arnold 1938:645, Fig. 9 [Wochenschrift für Aquarien- und Terrarienkunde v. 35 (no. 41); ref. 30135] Upper Amazon River, Loreto State Peru. Lectotype: ZMH H59 [ex 17759 in part]. Paralectotypes (3): ZMH H183 [ex 17759] (1). Type catalog: Ladiges et al. 1958:157 [ref. 19181], Wilkens & Dohse 1993:402 [ref. 21161]. Lectotype selected by Ladiges et al. 1958:157 [ref. 19181], not by Géry 1961, see Marinho et al. 2016:247 [ref. 34376]. Originally described as Hyphessobrycon loretonensis, which is obviously a spelling error for loretoensis. Since loretonensis was never used by subsequent authors, the name is here corrected to loretoensis for the sake of stability, though not fully in accordance with ICZN Art. 32.5. Also described by Ladiges 1938:51 [ref. 17153] as Hyphessobrycon loretoensis, which is the formal scientific description, but it is predated by Arnold 1938 by four days. •Valid as Hyphessobrycon loretoensis Ladiges 1938 -- (Ovchynnyk 1967:29 [ref. 37559], Ortega & Vari 1986:8 [ref. 9708], Lima & Malabarba in Reis et al. 2003:137 [ref. 27061], Barriga Salazar 2014:107 [ref. 35745], Lima et al. 2014:177 [ref. 33535], Ohara & Lima 2015:570 [ref. 33846], Zarske 2015:295 [ref. 34028], Dagosta et al. 2016:258 [ref. 34377], Marinho et al. 2016:248 [ref. 34376], Marinho et al. 2016:519 [ref. 34591], Zarske 2016:112 [ref. 34774], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:50 [ref. 35633], García-Alzate et al. 2017:126 [ref. 35253], Faria et al. 2020:374 [ref. 37543], Meza-Vargas et al. 2021:18 [ref. 39298]). Current status: Valid as Hyphessobrycon loretoensis Ladiges 1938. Acestrorhamphidae: Hyphessobryconinae. Distribution: South America: Amazon River basin (Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil). Habitat: freshwater.
