Syntypes: whereabouts unknown. Spelled two ways originally -- kovatchevi and kovatschevi; first reviser not researched; if none, then kovatschevi was selected by Eschmeyer 1998:846 [ref. 23416]. •Synonym of Gobio gobio (Linnaeus 1758), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Lelek 1987:190 [ref. 22962] as kovatschevi, Bănărescu et al. 1999:82 [ref. 24850] as kovatschevi). •Synonym of Gobio gobio (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Kottelat 1997:61 [ref. 22952] as kovatschevi). •Synonym of Gobio bulgaricus Drensky 1926 -- (Vasil'eva et al. 2005 [ref. 28515]). •Valid as Gobio kovatschevi Chichkoff 1937 -- (Kottelat & Persat 2005:228 [ref. 28378], Kottelat & Freyhof 2007:93 [ref. 29996], Turan et al. 2012:56 [ref. 31870], Çiçek et al. 2015:145 [ref. 35151], Turan et al. 2016:9 [ref. 34433], Turan et al. 2017:285 [ref. 35675], Turan et al. 2018:373 [ref. 36211], Özuluğ & Saç 2019:29 [ref. 36599]). Current status: Valid as Gobio kovatschevi Chichkoff 1937. Gobionidae. Distribution: Black Sea watersheds, Bulgaria and Turkey. Habitat: freshwater.
