amazonicus, Chalceus Agassiz [L.] in Spix & Agassiz 1829:68, Pl. 35 [Selecta genera et species piscium quos in itinere per Brasiliam; ref. 13] Rio Trombetas, igarapé Caxipacoré, Amazon River basin, Pará, Brazil, circa 0°34'S, 56°45'W. Neotype: INPA 3415. Name first published in Cuvier 1829:312 footnote [ref. 995] as Characinus amazonicus. Neotype designated by Lima 2017:122, 124 [ref. 35071] with discussion of the original type locality. See also Koerber 2021:93 [ref. 38172]. •Valid as Brycon amazonicus (Agassiz 1829) -- (Howes 1982:9 [ref. 14201], Lima in Reis et al. 2003:175 [ref. 27061], Lima 2004:282 [ref. 27858], Sarmiento et al. 2014:44, 184 [ref. 35004], Lima 2017:112 [ref. 35071], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:62 [ref. 35633], Careaga et al. 2020:75 [ref. 37774], Koerber 2021:92, 93 [ref. 38172], Meza-Vargas et al. 2021:20 [ref. 39298], Taphorn et al. 2022:12 [ref. 41297]). Current status: Valid as Brycon amazonicus (Agassiz 1829). Bryconidae: Bryconinae. Distribution: South America: Amazon River and its main tributaries (Brazil, Peru and Bolivia); Orinoco River basin (Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela). Introduced in southeastern and central Brazil. Habitat: freshwater.
