Neotype: MZUSP 45483. Neotype designated by Oyakawa & Mattox 2009:125 [ref. 30225]. •Synonym of Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch 1794) -- (Taphorn 1992:451 [ref. 23654]). •Valid as Hoplias brasiliensis (Spix & Agassiz 1829) -- (Oyakawa in Reis et al. 2003:239 [ref. 27061] with author as Agassiz, Oyakawa & Mattox 2009:122 [ref. 30225] with author as Spix, Blanco et al. 2010:361 [ref. 30964], Mattox et al. 2014:343 [ref. 33381], Silva et al. 2020:8 [ref. 37809], Vieira-Guimarães et al. 2024:41 [ref. 41258]). Current status: Valid as Hoplias brasiliensis (Spix & Agassiz 1829). Erythrinidae. Distribution: South America: coastal rivers (northeastern Brazil). Habitat: freshwater.
