Lectotype: MNHN A-8624 (dry, poor condition). Paralectotype: MNHN A-9800 (1) Argentina. Lectotype selected by Géry et al. 1987:396 [ref. 6001]. •Synonym of Leporinus obtusidens Valenciennes 1836 -- (Johannes 1999:16 [ref. 24121], Britski 2001:20 [ref. 26046]). •Valid as Leporinus elongatus Valenciennes 1850 -- (Britski et al. 1999:78 [ref. 24147], Garavello & Britski in Reis et al. 2003:75 [ref. 27061], Britski et al. 2012:443 [ref. 32317]). •Valid as Megaleporinus elongatus (Valenciennes 1850) -- (Ramirez et al. 2017:312 [ref. 34945], Birindelli et al. 2020:8 [ref. 37400], Silva et al. 2020:4 [ref. 37809]). Current status: Valid as Megaleporinus elongatus (Valenciennes 1850). Anostomidae. Distribution: South America: Jequitinhonha and Pardo River basins (Brazil). Habitat: freshwater.
