One species in BMNH 1864.1.21.44 is not this species (granti) and the other is friderici. •Synonym of Leporinus maculatus Müller & Troschel 1844 -- (Taphorn 1992:39 [ref. 23654]). •Valid as Leporinus megalepis Günther 1863 -- (Géry et al. 1988:704 [ref. 27759], Santos & Jégu 1996:166 [ref. 23717], Garavello 2000:199 [ref. 24492], Garavello & Britski in Reis et al. 2003:76 [ref. 27061]). •Valid as Hypomasticus megalepis (Günther 1863) -- (Sidlauskas & Vari 2008:74 [ref. 29786], Britski & Birindelli 2013:25 [ref. 32699], Birindelli et al. 2013:464 [ref. 32924], Birindelli et al. 2016:113 [ref. 34843], Taphorn et al. 2022:11 [ref. 41297]). Current status: Valid as Hypomasticus megalepis (Günther 1863). Anostomidae. Distribution: South America: Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. Habitat: freshwater.
