Type catalog: Gilbert 1978:77 [ref. 7042], Gilbert 1998:145 [ref. 23395]. Gilbert in 1978 [ref. 7042] changed the spelling to sallei because Regan 1906 indicated the name was for Mr. Sallé, but the original description did not indicate the derivation of the name, and the original spelling probably should be retained. •Valid as Notropis sallei [sic] (Günther 1868) -- (Gilbert 1978:77 [ref. 7042], Chernoff & Miller 1981:29 [ref. 20981], Chernoff & Miller 1986:182 [ref. 6782], Espinosa Pérez et al. 1993:19 [ref. 22290], Gilbert 1998:145 [ref. 23395], Schönhuth et al. 2001:360 [ref. 25185] as sallaei, Schönhuth & Doardrio 2003:333 [ref. 27194] as sallaei, Domínguez-Domínguez et al. 2009:161 [ref. 30768], Page et al. 2013:76 [ref. 32708]). •Valid as Aztecula sallaei (Günther 1868) -- (Nelson et al. 2004:68 [ref. 27807], Scharpf 2005:11 [ref. 28940], Miller et al. 2006:107 [ref. 28615], García-Andrade et al. 2021:[3] [ref. 38810], Page et al. 2023:67 [ref. 40505], Fricke et al. 2024:167 [ref. 41622]). Current status: Valid as Aztecula sallaei (Günther 1868). Leuciscidae: Pogonichthyinae. Distribution: Southern North America: widespread in southern-central highlands of Mexico: Río Lerma drainage, select tributaries of the Río Balsas, the endorheic Río Grande de Morelia basin, and headwaters of the Río Pánuco, Ciudad de México, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, México State, Michoacán, Morelos, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí. IUCN (2019): Least concern. Habitat: freshwater.
