Neotype: RMNH 32940. Unique holotype lost, neotype designated by Nagelkerke & Sibbing 1997:136 [ref. 23829]. Not preoccupied by Barbus macrophthalmus Bleeker 1855. Name appears first on p. 161. •Synonym of Barbus intermedius Rüppell 1835 -- (Lévêque & Daget 1984:254 [ref. 6186]). •Synonym of Barbus gorguari Rüppell 1835, but a valid subspecies macrophthalmus Bini 1940 -- (Mina et al. 1996:387 [ref. 38254]). •Valid as Barbus macrophtalmus Bini 1940 -- (Nagelkerke & Sibbing 1998:5 [ref. 23807], Nagelkerke & Sibbing 2000:205 [ref. 24546], de Graaf et al. 2000:7 [ref. 25061]). •Valid as Labeobarbus macrophtalmus (Bini 1940) -- (de Graaf et al. 2010:340 [ref. 34085], Nagelkerke et al. 2015:1198 [ref. 34084], Vreven et al. 2016:63 [ref. 34168], Beshera et al. 2016:377 [ref. 34343], Beshera et al. 2023:190 [ref. 40418]). Current status: Valid as Labeobarbus macrophtalmus (Bini 1940). Cyprinidae: Torinae. Distribution: East Africa: Lake Tana (Ethiopia). Habitat: freshwater.
