Lectotype: MNHN A-9920. Paralectotypes: MNHN A-9921 (1) Indian seas. Type catalog: Bruun 1937:183-184 [ref. 12982], Collette et al. 1997:10 [ref. 22813]. Lectotype established by Bruun 1937:182 [ref. 12982] as Dussumier specimen from Indian seas, apparently not same as lectotype selected by Heemstra & Parin 1986:393 [ref. 6293]. Spelled altipinnis by Günther 1866:290 [ref. 1983]. •Valid as Cypselurus altipennis (Valenciennes 1847) -- (Dor 1984:60 [ref. 29757], Goren & Dor 1994:15 [ref. 25356]). •Synonym of Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus (Bennett 1831) -- (Heemstra & Parin 1986:393 [ref. 6293], Paxton et al. 1989:332 [ref. 12442]). •Synonym of Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus (Bennett 1831), but a valid subspecies -- (Collette & Parin 1991:6 [ref. 19110], Paxton et al. 2006:726 [ref. 29073], Shakhovskoy & Collette 2022:345 [ref. 39717]). •Valid as Cheilopogon altipennis (Valenciennes 1847) -- (Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:128 [ref. 28072]). Current status: Valid as Cheilopogon altipennis (Valenciennes 1847). Exocoetidae. Distribution: Southwestern Indian Ocean: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). Habitat: marine.
