puckelli, Puntius (Capoeta) Day [F.] 1868:197 [Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1868 (pt 1); ref. 1076] Bangalore, India. Holotype (unique): whereabouts unknown. Day specimens: BMNH 1889.2.1.638 (1), 1889.2.1.4378 (1); ZSI 2728 (1), 7162 (1, lost). Type catalog: Whitehead & Talwar 1976:156 [ref. 23762]. Originally as puckelli but named after "Major Puckle"; the most desirable spelling would have been pucklei, but that change is not a mandatory one. Since the incorrect subsequent spelling pucklei has not attained prevailing usage status, the spelling puckelli should be continued. Reasons for loss of ZSI type specimens during WWII see Chopra 1947:349-350 [ref. 33077]. •Synonym of Puntius dorsalis (Jerdon 1849) -- (Talwar & Jhingran 1991:268 [ref. 20764]). •Valid as Puntius puckelli Day 1868 -- (Rema Devi 1992:355 [ref. 24007]). •Uncertain as Puntius puckeli Day 1868 -- (Plamoottil & Johnson 2020:98 [ref. 37958]). •Synonym of Puntius bimaculatus (Bleeker 1863) -- (Menon & Rema Devi 1993:220 [ref. 20007], Rema Devi 1993:197 [ref. 24010], Menon 1999:88 [ref. 24904], Plamoottil & Vineeth 2020:98 [ref. 38032]). •Synonym of Plesiopuntius bimaculatus (Bleeker 1863). Current status: Synonym of Plesiopuntius bimaculatus (Bleeker 1863). Cyprinidae: Smiliogastrinae. Habitat: freshwater.
