melanochir, Hemiramphus Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1847:41 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 19; ref. 4883] Port Western, Victoria, Australia. Lectotype: MNHN B-1066. Paralectotypes: MNHN B-2636 [ex MNHN B-1066] (2). Type catalog: Collette et al. 1997:17 [ref. 22813]. Lectotype selected by Collette 1974:71 [ref. 12930]. The species epithet was spelled as malanochir on p. 41 but as melanochir in the table on p. xi. The latter spelling has been adopted by subsequent authors (e.g. Collette 1974 [ref. 12930]). •Valid as Hyporhamphus melanochir (Valenciennes 1847) -- (Collette 1974:69 [ref. 12930], Paxton et al. 1989:337 [ref. 12442], Kuiter 1993:64 [ref. 23929], Gomon et al. 1994:389 [ref. 22532], Kuiter 1997:52 [ref. 25488], Hutchins 2001:24 [ref. 25847], Collette 2004:9 [ref. 27583], Paxton et al. 2006:736 [ref. 28994], Gomon 2008:407 [ref. 30616], Hoschke et al. 2019:154 [ref. 36626]). Current status: Valid as Hyporhamphus melanochir (Valenciennes 1847). Hemiramphidae. Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific: southern Australia. Habitat: brackish, marine.
