Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:18 [ref. 13621], Smith 2018:68 [ref. 36061]. Originally as dowei which appears to be intentional and not an inadvertent error. Named after Captain John M. Dow, so probably dowii was meant, possibly corrected by the printer or typesetter (Huber 2019:10 [ref. 36941]). In nineteenth century contemporary papers spelled dowii. Species epithet also seen as dowi or dovii. lANSP 6982 and USNM 8005 (3) are not types. Likely the holotype is the remaining specimen in USNM 6048 (D. G.
