Neotype designated by Dawson 1979:473 [ref. 19285]; original localities included Madagascar and RĂ©union. Appeared previously as nomen nudum in Kaup 1853:234 [ref. 2569]. •Synonym of Oostethus brachyurus (Bleeker 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Dawson 1979:471 [ref. 19285]). •Synonym of Microphis brachyurus (Bleeker 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Dawson 1984:156 [ref. 5879], Dawson 1986:456 [ref. 5650], Dawson 1986:286 [ref. 6201], Dawson 1985:139 [ref. 6541], Reinthal & Stiassny 1997:354 [ref. 22780], Fricke 1999:152 [ref. 24106], Keith et al. 1999:96 [ref. 24548]). •Synonym of Oostethus brachyurus (Bleeker 1854) -- (Kottelat 2013:306 [ref. 32989]). •Valid as Microphis millepunctatus (Kaup 1856) -- (Fricke et al. 2009:37 [ref. 30213], Kuiter 2009:273 [ref. 30404], Hamilton et al. 2016:Supplement 4 [ref. 35615], Fricke et al. 2018:124 [ref. 35805], Arndt & Fricke 2019:30 [ref. 36883], Moots 2022:482 [ref. 39722], Haÿ et al. 2023:22 [ref. 40264]). Current status: Valid as Microphis millepunctatus (Kaup 1856). Syngnathidae: Nerophinae. Distribution: Western Indian Ocean: South Africa and East Africa east to Madagascar, RĂ©union and Mauritius (western Mascarenes). Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
