Syntypes: MCZ 1310 (1), 1461 (1). •Synonym of Poeciliopsis occidentalis (Baird & Girard 1853), but a valid subspecies -- (Lee et al. 1980:553 [ref. 22416], Fuller et al. 1999:315 [ref. 25838], Scharpf 2007:21 [ref. 30398], Meyer 2015:295 [ref. 34698]). •Synonym of Poeciliopsis occidentalis (Baird & Girard 1853) -- (Rosen & Bailey 1963:137 [ref. 7067], Lucinda in Reis et al. 2003:570 [ref. 27061]). •Valid as Poeciliopsis sonoriensis (Girard 1859) -- (Miller 2006:249 [ref. 28615], Minckley & Marsh 2009:252 [ref. 31114], Page & Burr 2011:451 [ref. 31215], Huber 2019:131 [ref. 36941], Page et al. 2023:147 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Poeciliopsis sonoriensis (Girard 1859). Poeciliidae: Poeciliinae. Distribution: Southern North America: Río Yaqui system, Arizona (U.S.A.) and Mexico. Habitat: freshwater.
