Holotype (unique): MCZ 28751 (poor condition). •Synonym of Scopeloberyx robustus (Günther 1887) -- (Kotlyar 2004:6 [ref. 27590]). •Valid as Scopeloberyx maxillaris (Garman 1899) -- (Kotlyar 2004:590 [ref. 27867], Kotlyar 2005:31 [ref. 28178], Page et al. 2023:105 [ref. 40505], Fricke et al. 2024:251 [ref. 41622], Kotlyar 2024:1360 [ref. 41745]). Current status: Valid as Scopeloberyx maxillaris (Garman 1899). Melamphaidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: southern California (U.S.A.) south to northern Chile, including southern Gulf of California (Mexico) and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). IUCN (2020): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
