Holotype: USNM 88485. Paratypes: (possibly involving mixups) USNM 273310 [ex USNM 88485] (3), UF 18943 [ex FSM 41780] (5); non-types: USNM 88486 [ex FSM 41799] (2), UF (2, lost), FSM 44276 (3, lost). Type catalog: Gilbert 1974:114 [ref. 21035] as UF 18943 (5). •Synonym of Labidesthes sicculus (Cope 1865) but a valid subspecies -- (Scharpf 2007:8 [ref. 30398], Page & Burr 2011:422 [ref. 31215]). •Valid as Labidesthes vanhyningi Bean & Reid 1930 -- (Werneke & Armbruster 2015:542 [ref. 34000], Robins et al. 2018:184 [ref. 35886]). Current status: Valid as Labidesthes vanhyningi Bean & Reid 1930. Atherinopsidae: Menidiinae. Distribution: Southeastern U.S.A. Habitat: freshwater.
