Challenger in the years 1873-1876 v. 1 (pt 6); ref. 2011] Mary River near Tiaro, Queensland, Australia. Lectotype: BMNH 1879.5.14.167-172 (largest of 3). Paralectotypes: BMNH 1879.5.14.167-172 (2 of 3, not the largest), NMI block reg. no. 114.1899 (3). Type catalog: Wheeler & O'Riordan 1969:97 [ref. 20752]. Wheeler & O'Riordan 1969:97 [ref. 20752] regard the use of "holotype" by Fraser-Brunner 1955:201 as designation of a lectotype -- technically that is not so; lectotype established by Wheeler & O'Riordan 1969:97 [ref. 20752]. •Valid as Ambassis marianus Günther 1880 -- (Paxton et al. 1989:485 [ref. 12442], Allen & Burgess 1990:173 [ref. 15712], Kuiter 1993:149 [ref. 23929], Allen in McDowall 1996:148 [ref. 22909], Allen 1999:2435 [ref. 24812], Johnson 1999:729 [ref. 25471], Allen et al. 2006:972 [ref. 29066]). Current status: Valid as Ambassis marianus Günther 1880. Ambassidae. Distribution: Australia. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
