ocellata, Pogonoperca Günther [A.] 1859:169 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 1; ref. 1961] No locality stated [Mauritius, Mascarenes, southwestern Indian Ocean]. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1841.6.0.1766 (stuffed, not seen). Also listed was Plate XIV, fig. Distribution: Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), southern Mozambique, Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Madagascar, western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) and Maldives east to Andaman Sea and western Indonesia (Sumatra, Java). Habitat: marine.
