Neotype: SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 44704. Based on a figure and description of Burger (Boeseman 1947:62 [ref. 12876]). Neotype designated by Griffiths & Heemstra 1995:11 [ref. 22038]. •Valid as Nibea japonica (Temminck & Schlegel 1843) -- (Okamura in Masuda et al. 1984:162 [ref. 6441], Chen et al. 1997:74 [ref. 26476] dated 1844). •Valid as Argyrosomus japonicus (Temminck & Schlegel 1843) -- (Trewavas 1977:329 [ref. 4459], Griffiths & Heemstra 1995:10 [ref. 22038], Johnson 1999:737 [ref. 25471], Sasaki in Randall & Lim 2000:621 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:869 [ref. 25182], Hutchins 2001:35 [ref. 25847], Sasaki 2001:3127 [ref. 26108], Nakabo 2002:869 [ref. 26193], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S110 [ref. 27377], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:269 [ref. 28072], Bray et al. 2006:1257 [ref. 29091], Gomon 2008:589 [ref. 30616], Psomadakis et al. 2015:273 [ref. 34104], Motomura in Kimura et al. 2018:181 [ref. 36460], Eagderi et al. 2019:100 [ref. 37020] as japonicas, Hoschke et al. 2019:156 [ref. 36626]). Current status: Valid as Argyrosomus japonicus (Temminck & Schlegel 1843). Sciaenidae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: East Africa and Persian Gulf east to Philippines, north to southern Japan, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia) and Tasmania (Australia). Habitat: brackish, marine.
