Based on a drawing and description in manuscript by Commerson (Philibert Commerson, 1727-1773, French explorer and naturalist), from Madagascar (according to Cuvier). Current status: Valid as Argyrosomus hololepidotus (Lacepède 1801). Sciaenidae. Distribution: Southwestern Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), Madagascar and Mascarenes (Mauritius); records from other areas based on misidentifications. But range in ref. 34618 are Mauritania to South Africa, and in Indian Ocean to Australia. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
