Holotype (unique): RMNH 5576 (1 of 9, 3 in size range). •Valid as Apogon margaritophorus Bleeker 1855 -- (Allen 1997:110 [ref. 23977], Allen 1999:2606 [ref. 24812], Allen in Randall & Lim 2000:613 [ref. 25122], Allen 2000:100 [ref. 25868], Allen & Adrim 2003:35 [ref. 26830], Kimura et al. in Kimura & Matsuura 2003:63 [ref. 27510]). •Valid as Ostorhinchus margaritophorus (Bleeker 1855) -- (Allen & Erdmann 2012:397 [ref. 31980], Mabuchi et al. 2014:200 [ref. 33426], Yoshida in Kimura et al. 2015:40 [ref. 34319], Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:124 [ref. 36965], Allen & Erdmann 2024:422 [ref. 40796]). Current status: Valid as Ostorhinchus margaritophorus (Bleeker 1855). Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Malaysia and Sumatra (Indonesia) east to Philippines and Papua New Guinea, south to Solomon Islands. Habitat: marine.
