Syntypes: BMNH 1904.5.25.113-117 (5). BMNH 1904.5.25.113 is listed as lectotype at the BMNH [not investigated]. •Valid as Apogon spilurus Regan 1905 -- (Mee 1996:106 [ref. 22471], Gon & Randall 2003:25 [ref. 26750], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S106 [ref. 27377], Golani & Bogorodsky 2010:68 [ref. 35264]). •Valid as Ostorhinchus spilurus (Regan 1905) -- (Mabuchi et al. 2014:201 [ref. 33426], Golani & Fricke 2018:77 [ref. 36273], Fraser et al. 2022:202 [ref. 39752], Moazzam & Osmany 2023:63 [ref. 40689]). Current status: Valid as Ostorhinchus spilurus (Regan 1905). Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Distribution: Red Sea; western Indian Ocean: Somalia, Seychelles, Mascarenes (Mauritius), Pakistan. Habitat: marine.
