Holotype (unique): MNHN A-0691 (dry). Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:97 [ref. 19171], Bauchot & Daget 1972:63 [ref. 20898]. Based on a Commerson drawing, but specimen at MNHN. •Same as Sparus mylio Lacepède 1802. •Synonym of Acanthopagrus bifasciatus (Forsskål 1775) -- (Fricke 1999:291 [ref. 24106], Kume & Yoshino 2008:53 [ref. 29572]). •Valid as Acanthopagrus catenula (Lacepède 1801) -- (Iwatsuki & Heemstra 2011:45 [ref. 31505], Iwatsuki 2013:87 [ref. 32744], Saddiqui et al. 2014:76 [ref. 33479], Al-Badri & Jawad 2014:432 [ref. 33633], Psomadakis et al. 2015:260 [ref. 34104], Ali et al. 2018:328 [ref. 36183], Fricke et al. 2018:218 [ref. 35805], Jawad et al. 2018:111 [ref. 36262], Eagderi et al. 2019:113 [ref. 37020], Parenti 2019:69 [ref. 36892], Zajonz et al. 2019:79 [ref. 36871], Iwatsuki & Heemstra 2022:289 [ref. 39785], Zajonz et al. 2022:178 [ref. 40522]). Distribution: Western Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, southern Oman, Persian Gulf to Socotra (Yemen), Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues). Habitat: brackish, marine.
