Apparently the smaller specimen (about 170 mm SL) is probably the holotype based on note in bottle by J. E. Current status: Valid as Parupeneus biaculeatus (Richardson 1846). Mullidae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Vietnam and southern China north to Nagasaki Prefecture (Japan) and southern Sea of Japan. Habitat: marine.
