Type catalog: Blanc 1962:206 [ref. 20868] but dated to 1833. The species argus and orinocensis were described simultaneously; Günther 1862:309 acts as first reviser (see Kullander & Ferreira 2006:313 [ref. 28883]). •Synonym of Cichla orinocensis Humboldt 1821 -- (Machado-Allison et al. 2000:67 [ref. 26045], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:621 [ref. 27061], Kullander & Ferreira 2006:306 [ref. 28883], Sabaj et al. 2020:70 [ref. 37398]).
