Holotype (unique): destroyed in 1945. Type catalog: Kamohara 1961:5 [ref. 19282]. •Valid as Atrophacanthus japonicus (Kamohara 1941) -- (Tyler 1968:166 [ref. 6438], Matsuura in Masuda et al. 1984:357 [ref. 6441], Adam et al. 1998:16 [ref. 23610], Matsuura in Randall & Lim 2000:647 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:1395 [ref. 25182], Matsuura 2001:3904 [ref. 26315], Shinohara et al. 2001:337 [ref. 25995], Nakabo 2002:1395 [ref. 26193], Matsuura 2014:4 [ref. 33576], Gloerfelt-Tarp & Kailola 2022:289 [ref. 41223]). Current status: Valid as Atrophacanthus japonicus (Kamohara 1941). Triacanthodidae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, East Africa; Indonesia east to Philippines, north to southern Japan. Habitat: marine.
