obscurus, Sphoeroides ocellatus form Abe [T.] 1949:97, Pls. 1 (figs. 3-4), 2 (fig. 1) [Bulletin of the Biogeographical Society of Japan v. 14 (no. 13); ref. 3] Market in Tokyo, Japan (among fishes caught from eastern China Sea or its adjoining waters). Holotype: ZUMT 8015. Paratypes: ZUMT 8016 (1, dry), ZUMT [ex ABE 2079 and 2079'] (2). Non-types (doubtfully included): ZUMT 29800-03 (4). •Valid as Fugu obscurus (Abe 1949) -- (Zheng 1989:381 [ref. 21202], Zhu 1995:191 [ref. 25213], Cheng & Zhou 1997:489 [ref. 26385], Wang et al. 2001:341 [ref. 26566]). •Valid as Takifugu obscurus (Abe 1949) -- (Lindberg et al. 1997:118 [ref. 23547], Kim 1997:504 [ref. 24032], Matsuura in Randall & Lim 2000:649 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:1423 [ref. 25182], Ebert 2001:78 [ref. 25494], Kim & Park 2002:424 [ref. 25913], Nakabo 2002:1423 [ref. 26193], Choi et al. 2003:453, 699 [ref. 26218], Kim et al. 2020:203 [ref. 39118]). Current status: Valid as Takifugu obscurus (Abe 1949). Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Western Pacific. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
