Lectotype: BMNH 1921.9.6.134. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1921.9.6.135-138 (4). Lectotype selected by Eccles & Trewavas 1989:192 [ref. 13547]. •Valid as Trematocranus placodon (Regan 1922) -- (Eccles & Trewavas 1989:190 [ref. 13547], Maréchal 1991:516 [ref. 20944], Snoeks & Hanssens 2004:308 [ref. 28117], Konings 2016:361 [ref. 34521], Dierickx et al. 2018:163 [ref. 35849]). Current status: Valid as Trematocranus placodon (Regan 1922). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: Eastern Africa: Lakes Malawi and Malombe and upper Shiré River. Habitat: freshwater.
