Lectotype: BMNH 1935.6.14.895. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1935.6.14.896-902 (11, now 10), 1935.6.14.903-904 (2); NMW 25602 (1); MNHN 1937-0175 [ex BMNH] (1). Type catalog: Blanc 1962:211 [ref. 20868]. Lectotype selected by Eccles & Trewavas 1989:84 [ref. 13547] •Valid as Nyassachromis purpurans (Trewavas 1935) -- (Eccles & Trewavas 1989:83 [ref. 13547], Maréchal 1991:301 [ref. 20944], Konings 2016:327 [ref. 34521]). Current status: Valid as Nyassachromis purpurans (Trewavas 1935). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: Eastern Africa: Lake Malawi. Habitat: freshwater.
