spilopterus, Haplochromis Trewavas [E.] 1935:82, 91 [Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 10) v. 16 (no. 91) (art. 6); ref. 4451] Shire Bar to Nkhudzi, Lake Malawi [Lake Nyasa], southeastern Africa. Lectotype: BMNH 1935.6.14.644. Paralectotypes: (26) BMNH 1935.6.14.645-647 (3), 1935.6.14.648 (1), 1935.6.14.649-651 (3), 1935.6.14.652-657 (8); NMW 25621 (1). Lectotype selected by Eccles & Trewavas 1989:70 [ref. 13547]. •Valid as Protomelas spilopterus (Trewavas 1935) -- (Eccles & Trewavas 1989:69 [ref. 13547], Maréchal 1991:391 [ref. 20944], Snoeks & Hanssens 2004:297 [ref. 28117], Oliver 2012:48 [ref., 32111], Dierickx & Snoeks 2020:10 [ref. 37605]). •Valid as Hemitaeniochromis spilopterus (Trewavas 1935) -- (Konings 2016:172 [ref. 34521]). Current status: Valid as Protomelas spilopterus (Trewavas 1935). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: Eastern Africa: Lake Malawi. Habitat: freshwater.
