P.] 1945:95 [Spolia Zeylanica v. 24 (pt 2); ref. 13082] Mahaweli River basin, Angammedilla, Sri Lamka, 7°51'14"N, 80°54'25"E, elevation 81 meters [Sri Lanka]. Neotype: NMSL 2020.02.01. Type information: Pethiyagoda 1991:336 [ref. 20075]. Original genus should have been spelled Ophicephalus. Neotype designated by Sudasinghe et al. 2020:120 [ref. 37353]. •Synonym of Channa marulius (Hamilton 1822) -- (Talwar & Jhingran 1991:1017 [ref. 20764], Menon 1999:274 [ref. 24904] as Chana, Courtenay & Williams 2004:83 [ref. 27545], Kottelat 2013:461 [ref. 32989], Adamson & Britz 2018:549 [ref. 36282]). •Valid as Channa ara (Deraniyagala 1945) -- (Perera et al. 2020:414 [ref. 37771], Sudasinghe et al. 2020:116 [ref. 37353]). Current status: Valid as Channa ara (Deraniyagala 1945). Channidae. Distribution: South Asia: Mahaweli River system (Sri Lanka) endemic. Habitat: freshwater.
