Distribution: Amazon and Orinoco basins, introduced elsewhere: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Southeast Asia. Introduced or raised in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Italy. Habitat: freshwater.
