Holotype: USNM 121227. Paratypes: MCZ 37240 [ex USNM 121229] (3); UMMZ 142484 [ex USNM 121229] (1); USNM 121228 (5), 121229 (16, now 12, 3 to MCZ, 1 to UMMZ), 121230 (1, missing), 121231 (2). Type catalog: Ferraris & Vari 1992:41 [ref. 19771], Ferraris 2007:420 [ref. 29155]. •Synonym of Trichomycterus banneaui (Eigenmann 1912), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Burgess 1989:321 [ref. 12860]). •Valid as Trichomycterus maracaiboensis (Schultz 1944) -- (de Pinna & Wosiacki in Reis et al. 2003:282 [ref. 27061], Ferraris 2007:420 [ref. 29155], Ardila Rodríguez 2007:[9] [ref. 29569], Ardila Rodríguez 2011:[7] [ref. 32732], Ardila Rodríguez 2014:11 [ref. 33769], Ardila Rodríguez 2016:10 [ref. 34399], Ardila Rodríguez 2016:16 [ref. 35108], Ardila Rodríguez 2017:9 [ref. 35579], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:70 [ref. 35633], Ardila Rodríguez 2018:11 [ref. 35926]). Current status: Valid as Trichomycterus maracaiboensis (Schultz 1944). Trichomycteridae: Trichomycterinae. Distribution: San Juan River, tributary to Motatán River, Lake Maracaibo basin, Venezuela and río Zulia, Colombia. Habitat: freshwater.
