nigros, Acanthurus Günther [A.] 1861:332 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 3; ref. 1964] Aneiteum Island, Vanuatu. Lectotype: BMNH 1861.5.31.29 (dry). Paralectotypes: (2) BMNH 1861.5.31.41 (1, stuffed). Regarded as an original description, Acanthurus nigroris included in synonymy with question; an alternate interpretation is that this is an unjustified emendation of Acanthurus nigroris. Lectotype selected by Randall 1956:100 [ref. 12221]. •Synonym of Acanthurus nigroris Valenciennes 1835 -- (Randall 1956:187 [ref. 12221], Mundy 2005:489 [ref. 28379]). •Valid as Acanthurus nigros Günther 1861 -- (Randall et al. 2011:267 [ref. 31249], Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2015:8 [ref. 33988], Hanahara et al. 2021:45 [ref. 38636]). Current status: Valid as Acanthurus nigros Günther 1861. Acanthuridae. Distribution: Western and central Pacific: Minamidaitojima Island (off southern Japan), Palau, Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia east to Marshall Islands, Line Islands and French Polynesia. Habitat: marine.
