Neotype: NMNZ P.028043. Type catalog: Fricke et al. 2018:[15] [ref. 36159]. Name attributable to Schneider, description taken from Forster manuscript (reproduced in Lichtenstein 1844:128-130 [ref. 17531] as "Scorpaena cottoides"). Genus spelled Synanceja on p. 195 but corrected in Corrigenda. Current status: Valid as Scorpaena papillosa (Schneider & Forster 1801). Scorpaenidae: Scorpaeninae. Distribution: Southwestern Pacific: southeastern Australia, from Port Jackson, New South Wales (33°S) to the south coast of Tasmania (43°S) [subspecies ergastulorum], and [subspecies papillosa]: New Zealand, from the Three Kings Islands (34°S) to the Camp-bell Plateau and Auckland Islands (48°S). Habitat: marine.
