atlanticus, Monochirus hispidus Chabanaud [P.] 1940:150 [Bulletin du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Série 2) v. 12 (no. 4); ref. 13167] Banjul (formerly Bathurst), western coast of Africa. Holotype: IRSNB (lost in WWII). Paratypes: (numerous) BMNH 1872.2.6.9 (1), 1924.1.31.1 (1); IRSNB 52 (1); MNHN 1942-0079 (1). Type catalog: Walschaerts 1987:47 [ref. 20755], Desoutter et al. 2001:322 [ref. 25922]. Also described as new (Monochirus atlanticus) in Chabanaud 1949:57 [ref. 13003]. •Synonym of Monochirus hispidus Rafinesque 1814 -- (Torchio 1973:634 [ref. 6892], Desoutter 1990:1043 [ref. 18967]). •Valid as Monochirus atlanticus Chabanaud 1940 -- (Desoutter et al. 2001:322 [ref. 25922] with doubt as to status as a subspecies, Desoutter-Meniger & Munroe in Carpenter & De Angelis 2016:3022 [ref. 34618], Carneiro et al. 2019:194 [ref. 37250], Reiner 2019:298 [ref. 38139], Fermon et al. 2022:233 [ref. 39448]). Current status: Valid as Monochirus atlanticus Chabanaud 1940. Soleidae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Spain south to Gabon, including Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, and São Tomé and Principe. Habitat: marine.
