nigricans, Sebastodes Schmidt [P. Yu.] 1930:461 [Proceedings of the 4th Pacific Science Congress, Java, 1929 v. 3 (Biol. Pap.); ref. 3941] Nagasaki, Japan. Holotype (unique): ZIN 22686. Appeared first as above with brief characterization (and misspelled nigricaus); more complete description in Schmidt 1931:97, Fig. 13 [ref. 16332] as Sebastodes (Acumentum) nigricans. Kai & Nakabo 2013:551 [ref. 32653] regard nigrocaus as valid [but nigricans has been used for 56 species of fishes, and nigricaus for zero; therefore nigricaus is regarded as a type-setting error]. •Apparently a synonym of Sebastes pachycephalus Temminck & Schlegel 1843. •Synonym of Sebastes pachycephalus Temminck & Schlegel 1843, but a valid subspecies -- (Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:76 [ref. 15964], Nakabo 2000:595 [ref. 25086], Nakabo 2002:595 [ref. 26001], Kai et al. 2011:333 [ref. 31619]). •Valid as Sebastes nigricans (Schmidt 1930) -- (Cheng & Zhou 1997:409 [ref. 26385] dated 1931, Shytko 2001:52 [ref. 26410]). •Synonym of Sebastes pachycephalus Temminck & Schlegel 1843 -- (Kai et al. 2011:340 [ref. 31619], Kai & Nakabo 2013:543 [ref. 32653], Parin et al. 2014:219 [ref. 33547]). Current status: Synonym of Sebastes pachycephalus Temminck & Schlegel 1843. Scorpaenidae: Sebastinae. Habitat: marine.
