Neotype: UW 43493. Appeared as Epinephelus ciliatus Camtschaticus et Americanus. Orr & Blackburn 2004 [ref. 27661] showed that ciliatus and its presumed synonym variabilis were separate species. Neotype designated by Orr & Blackburn 2004:339 [ref. 27661]. Original type locality was bodering Kamchatka, Russia and Aleutian Is.
