ciliatus, Epinephelus Tilesius [W. G. von] 1813:474, Pl. 16 (figs. 1-6) [Mémoires de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences de Saint Pétersbourg v. 4 (for 1811); ref. 13413] Lynn Canal, north of Funter Bay, 58.2467°N, 134.899°W, depth 25 meters. Neotype: UW 43493. Appeared as Epinephelus ciliatus Camtschaticus et Americanus. Orr & Blackburn 2004 [ref. 27661] showed that ciliatus and its presumed synonym variabilis were separate species. Neotype designated by Orr & Blackburn 2004:339 [ref. 27661]. Original type locality was bodering Kamchatka, Russia and Aleutian Is. Current status: Valid as Sebastes ciliatus (Tilesius 1813). Sebastidae: Sebastinae. Distribution: North Pacific: western Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea, through the Gulf of Alaska, and to British Columbia. Habitat: marine.
