Type catalog: Henn 1928:57 [ref. 12305] as bovallii, Böhlke 1953:26 [ref. 12291], Nijssen et al. 1982:24 [ref. 19236], Böhlke 1984:44 [ref. 13621], Ibarra & Stewart 1987:68 [ref. 12367], Vari & Howe 1991:34 [ref. 19022]. Two types (i.e. 2 holotypes) were listed in the original description; authors have interpreted one of them as holotype as recorded in the FMNH catalog. Ibarra & Stewart list 171 specimens from 4 localities as now present at FMNH. Appeared originally as bovalii, named for the family Bovalius, i.e. Dr. Bovalius and his brother, Dr. Ed. Bovalius, the correct species epithet would have been bovaliorum, not to be corrected according to the ICZN. •Valid as Poecilocharax bovalii Eigenmann 1909 -- (Géry 1970:17 [ref. 34971], Buckup in Reis et al. 2003:93 [ref. 27061], Ohara et al. 2022:19 [ref. 39267], Taphorn et al. 2022:22 [ref. 41297] as bovaliorum, Buckup 2024:309 [ref. 40817] as bovaliorum). Current status: Valid as Poecilocharax bovalii Eigenmann 1909. Crenuchidae: Crenuchinae. Distribution: South America: Kaieteur Falls, Potaro River drainage (Guyana) endemic. Habitat: freshwater.
