Syntypes: BMNH 1898.9.10.2-4 (3). On p. 8 of v. 1 in 1902. •Synonym of Caffrogobius nudiceps (Valenciennes 1837) -- (Hoese 1986:784 [ref. 5670], Maugé 1986:363 [ref. 6218], Miller 1990:927 [ref. 19376]). •Valid as Caffrogobius gilchristi (Boulenger 1898) -- (Goren 1996:9 [ref. 24415], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:395 [ref. 28072], Schliewen 2011:214 [ref. 31738], Parenti 2021:110 [ref. 38603], Larson 2022:58 [ref. 39971]). Current status: Valid as Caffrogobius gilchristi (Boulenger 1898). Gobiidae: Gobiinae. Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic, southwestern Indian Ocean: Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) north to southern Mozambique. Habitat: brackish, marine.
