Type catalog: Bauchot & Desoutter 1987:26 [ref. 6382], Hutchings & Griffiths 2005:11 [ref. 40362]. Based on Umbrina cirrhosa var. canariensis of Steindachner. Holotype lost according to Hutchings & Griffiths 2005:11 [ref. 40362]. •Questionably a synonym of Umbrina canariensis Valenciennes 1843 -- (Chao in Whitehead et al. 1986:872 [ref. 13676]). •Valid as Umbrina steindachneri Cadenat 1951 -- (Chao & Trewavas 1990:826 [ref. 18934], Hutchings & Griffiths 2005:9 [ref. 40362], Chao in Carpenter & De Angelis 2016:2654[ref. 34618], Reiner 2019:226 [ref. 38139], Parenti 2020:56 [ref. 37439], Fermon et al. 2022:285 [ref. 39448]). Current status: Valid as Umbrina steindachneri Cadenat 1951. Sciaenidae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Mauritania south to Angola, including São Tomé and Principe. Habitat: marine.
