Systema Naturae per regna tria naturae v. 1 (pt 3); ref. 18139] Kottelat & Freyhof 2009:83-85 [ref. 30320] provide extensive remarks on the use of this name by Güldenstädt. They suggest that Güldenstädt (1775:457, Pl. 11) did not place the taxon in a genus and that acerina was not proposed as a scientific name [if so, it does not need to have been placed in a genus, W. N .E.]. They indicate that the name acerina was made available by Gmelin 1789:1321. They declare tanaicensis as a nomen oblitum, and declare acerina as a nomen protectum.
