Holotype: USNM 210692. Paratypes: FMNH 80401 (7), USNM 214364 (orig. 6, now 3 + 2 c&s). Additional specimens deposited at ANSP, BMNH, FMNH, MBUCV, MZUSP, USNM. Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:7 [ref. 12367], Vari & Howe 1991:4 [ref. 19022]. •Valid as Ammocryptocharax elegans Weitzman & Kanazawa 1976 -- (Taphorn 1992:365 [ref. 23654], Buckup 1993:107 [ref. 20831], Buckup 1993:328 [ref. 26741], Buckup in Reis et al. 2003:88 [ref. 27061], Sarmiento et al. 2014:185 [ref. 35004], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:34 [ref. 35633], Meza-Vargas et al. 2021:20 [ref. 39298]). Current status: Valid as Ammocryptocharax elegans Weitzman & Kanazawa 1976. Crenuchidae: Characidiinae. Distribution: South America: Amazon River and upper Orinoco River basins (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela). Habitat: freshwater.
