Paratypes: CAS 78887 [ex IU 1362, 14333] (?, missing), FMNH 57824 [ex CM 6807a-b] (orig. 3, now 2). Type catalog: Henn 1928:59 [ref. 12305], Ibarra & Stewart 1987:55 [ref. 12367]. Species as melanopterus in caption to Fig. 14 (regarded as in error), elsewhere (3 times) as megalopterus. •Valid as Hyphessobrycon megalopterus (Eigenmann 1915) -- (Weitzman & Palmer 1997:231 [ref. 22743] with comment on locality, Lima & Gerhard 2001:112 [ref. 25355], Lima & Malabarba in Reis et al. 2003:138 [ref. 27061], Malabarba et al. 2012:57 [ref. 31810], Sarmiento et al. 2014:184 [ref. 35004], Ohara et al. 2017:10 [ref. 35494], Pastana et al. 2017:13 [ref. 35596]). •Valid as Megalamphodus megalopterus Eigenmann 1915 -- (Britski et al. 1999:44 [ref. 24147], Lasso et al. 2001:96 [ref. 25928], Melo et al. 2024:21 [ref. 41541]). Current status: Valid as Megalamphodus megalopterus Eigenmann 1915. Acestrorhamphidae: Megalamphodinae. Distribution: South America: upper Paraguay and GuaporĂ© River basins, Bolivia and Brazil. Habitat: freshwater.
